2025-04-30 - 2025-05-03 - Spain to Somerset

 

I did make it to England without incident.  Secured a rental car and picked up Esther from the stay by hour hotel where she had been resting since 0700 this morning.  We drove to our cottage in the township of Horton in Somerset, UK.  It is a delightful place!  Very quiet, in the country, with beautiful views all around.  We survived the first day of driving on the left side of the road with only two cars honking at us.  We went to the supermarket, got food and made ourselves a charcuterie board, watched an episode of Ted Lasso and crashed.

Being in a quiet place with no responsibilities has made us realize how deeply tired we are.  It seems like we have been running with no reserve for most of our relationship.  Being in a place with no demands on. us, quiet and beauty all around has garnered two hour naps, countryside walks and pub visits.   Even though we are finishing up. the third day of this routine, I don't see us making dramatic changes.  Esther has been studying for her Christology course and I have been catching up on reading and journaling.    

Here are some pictures of our stay here so far.  

 

The sun is not setting here until after 2100BST.  It had been raining most of the day.  When it let up we went walking around Horton, which is right next to Broadway (the Somerset Broadway).  It was still sprinkling, but not enough to deter us.  

 

 We came to the edge of Horton Village and found a beautiful pathway which runs along a stream and goes to the Broadway Village.   

 

The stream on the Broadway side has a small waterfall.  I heard the waterfall and was a bit concerned it was starting a real rain, but was happily wrong.  

 

While in Broadway, we found the oldest pub in the area, The Bell.  It was a delightful place.  

 

We had a drink and homemade apple pie and ice cream.

 20 April - we all arrived without incident.  Dean got chops for the longest distance traveled.  He actually started out on Sunday evening, Anchorage, Seattle, NYC, Madrid.  After meeting together at the hotel room, we did some sightseeing and got dinner.     21 April - Today was a relocation day.  We traveled by metro, train, and then bus, as the train tracks to our final destination were under construction/repair.  The biggest adventure was when we were deboarding the bus, one of our guys left his backpack on the bus.  It was an anxious couple of hours, but around 2200, we had the bag in hand, got a late meal and hit the rack.      NOTE:   Rudy Roth is also doing a blog and will have more pictures.  You can go here to open the blog.

I have named this blog c2.lewallens.com as I have started a new chapter in my life.  My previous family log's last entry was the one about Alice's surgery, hospitalization, and death.   There will be some of you reading this who will not know anything beyond 4 Apr 2024.   Let me bring you up to date.   In Jan 2025, I was at rest with being a widower.   I felt I had won the life lottery with Alice.   I was grateful to the Lord for His presence and provision for me during the first year without Alice.   I was at rest with my situation and was not pursuing any romantic relationships.     At the Jan 2025 retreat, I ran into Esther Weston.    I knew her vaguely, as Alice and Esther had traveled together for a Wellspring retreat in 2015.    She talked with me after a facilitator meeting expressing her condolences for Alice's death and shared about her journey with her husband of 33 years leaving her. ...

2024-04-24 Day 2

  We were blessed once again with perfect weather. Temp 53 degrees,      The path started fairly aggressively and then was mostly level.  We had some good scenic views.  Above is a picture of us at our departure point.   At the 10 mile point, we stopped for lunch.  It turns out they had the best burgers of any place we had eaten on the trip.  When we gathered for a picture before we left the restaurant, a small dog who was running free decided to join our picture.  This dog caused no small consternation to a german shepherd dog that was fenced in nearby.    Here is a picture of some of one of several cemetery buildings we saw along the way.   My classmate, Rudy, has uploaded all the pictures from everyone on the trip.
